Baby Conspiracy Theory

I think baby cribs should only be made out of foam, or at least covered in foam once the metal or wooden crib is assembled. My child's crib has bumpers AND puffy quilts lining the large areas where the bumper does not reach. This is my solution... I guess I am not that creative...

Now that Liam can crawl, stand and trace, he pulls all the blankets down, crawls around and rams his head into the side bars. And if he's not ramming his head into them, he is standing up and losing his balance to crack the side of his head on the wooden bars he's uncovered. And he does this in mere seconds... by the time I know he's awake and I walk in there, he's hurt himself.

And then there are the pesky bed frames. We have a twin bed in Liam's room and of course a queen bed in our room. When Liam is playing underfoot and sees any vertical height, he wants to crawl towards it and climb it so he can stand. Yep, those bed frames are crawling-baby-height... just perfect for ramming his head into. We are lucky he's got a tough noggin... he hasn't gotten bruises anywhere on his head... just his eye so far... as you can see here.

So the conspiracy... Nature is against us! Klutzy babies make we mothers look like neglectful abusers! It's not fair to the little sweethearts to get hurt in their attempts to practice practice practice! And it's not fair to the parents who really are watching closely and tending to their children.

I have never judged bruised children. But I find mothers continually make excuses for themselves relaying the stories of how the bruise, red mark or bump happened. I BELIEVE YOU! Ever since I saw my friend's one year old run into walls again and again by accident, I knew that kids gotta hurt themselves to learn. It's just sad it takes so long for them to catch on. I mean, this one-year-old learned to walk at 10 months and it took a good few months or so before he stopped running into walls, corners and tables just his height. Can we say OUCH!? Poor babies!

I don't even really see anything. You can chock it up to allergies! E always has these awful circles under her eyes that look like another baby punched her. But her daddy and I both had severe allergies as children so it's something we're definately prepared for in the future to come...

Also, a lot of times when E tumbles and bumps herself, she looks for someone to cry to. If nobody is around when she's hurt (as long as she's not bleeding or anything) she'll wimper, notice nobody is there, and continue to play and explore. She cries most often when I'm around, and not as much when Daddy is!

Yeah, Liam only cries if he really hurt himself bad! And even then he simmers down in a few seconds. Thank goodness for tough babies!

It's amazing that kids actually survive. We've had plenty of bruises, bumps, scratches, cuts, and almost anything else you can imagine.

There are three kids in our family and all three of us have several early childhood scars.

I know what you mean. I fine bruises and curs on William, and I have no idea how he got them. And I watch him constantly!

And isn't it sad that eventually we will be back tot his when we are old. Older people ALWAYS have bruises. It is sad all round!

At a playdate yesterday, we had a little boy over who just started walking. He was VERY proud of his booboos - it was so funny! He kept pointing and saying "booboo" and was very serious about the whole thing. I think it's just a fact of life that kid's will get scrapes, bruises, etc... His mom called his scraped up knees his "kid knees" :P

I believe you Gina! Liv always scratches herself, even if I've just clipped her nails. It's sad!! :(

Boo is becoming the same way! Each day I find a new owie on him that I didn't even know he had! I never seems to phase him, the only time is cries is when he's really hurt, or the process of getting hurt scares him!

I have to say that Liam is growing at an amazing rate~ and as I have said before he is all boy, and it seems like little boys are always covered in boo boos. I know Jaden was!

I can totally relate to what you are saying! My youngest is such a klutz and has hurt her head and knees more times than I care to count! I don't even like to go in public when she has bruises. Pretty sad that this is the way it is huh??

And they always seem to get one of those conspicuous bruises right before a scheduled photo shoot. At least as they get older the owies leave their heads alone more and focus on their knees. As if that were any kind of consolation!

Oh, and I love the fun pictures you've posted that you've taken with your new camera!

Poor kid! My Jake has always got some bruise or cut on his head. He's way more prone to various bonks, bumps, scratches, and the like than Isaac. Have you thought about buying a pool noodle (one with a hole in the center) and slicing through one side to the middle and using that to wrap around the bed frame or the crib bars? For extra class you could duct tape it in place. I don't know if it would actually work, but I had the thought while I was reading your post and thought I'd share the idea.

I had that thought too! Very funny! I am glad we didn't spend OUR money on his beautiful crib... such a shame to cover it up nevertheless.

Babie helmets are looking better and better everyday. Maybe they can make them for my 3 year old too, who seems to have a knack for scratches, cuts and bruises! He is all boy with NO fear!

Ah, a helmet!!! Smart mama! Now where can I find one of those? [takes off to search the net]

even my mostly stationary baby gives himself booboos. He's started hitting himself in the head with his toys and pacifier. Every once in awhile he gets himself right in the eye. And I was hoping this would get better as he gets older and gets more coordination- but I guess he will just find new ways to be uncoordinated...
